The "GAC Art League" was formed at the request of patrons of the Garden & Arts Center (GAC). The GAC answered by establishing an Art League for visual artists and those interested in art. After many months of researching other art organizations with similar affiliations as the GAC and Art League would have, we came up with a Mission Statement and a vision of what the Art League would be. Buster Joes supported this idea and the GAC staff asked if he would be interested in taking the role of promoting and developing the membership. Hence the Art League of West Texas was formed. The League had the first meeting on Sunday, February 8, 2009.
The intent of the GAC is to have the League become an organization that will stand on its own. The The GAC staff envisions an organization similar to the Lubbock Art Association which disbanded some years back. The League will have a membership to include visual artists and those interested in the visual arts. The League and the GAC will be a setting that will support and encourage all artists. The question from the beginning was would it be only "fine" art? The GAC has intended from the conception that we would include all visual arts... fine arts and crafts. The GAC has venues in place to support both. We have the ability to exhibit fine art and a yearly arts and craft show for artists and crafters alike. The GAC will be home base for the Art League. The GAC and League will work hand in hand to promote the arts and provide affordable workshops, classes and host quality exhibitions for the South Plains. Since the GAC offers classes to the public we hoped that the GAC could count on the vast talent in the League to help the GAC offer a variety of art classes in every medium possible.
